SUMMARY:Virtual History Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Paterson Museum Foundation invites you to join us on Zoom on Tuesday\, October 10th at 7pm as historian and author Daniel J. Willever presents\, Made in Paterson: The Life and Legacy of U.S. Senator William Hughes. Willever will discuss his new book\, Made in Paterson\, exploring the life career of U.S. Senator William Hughes\, a frequently overlooked yet influential figure of Paterson’s history. \nWillever’s research interweaves Hughes’s life with aspects of Paterson’s unique local history\, tracing his origins in the local labor movement\, legal studies\, time as a soldier\, and his work defending striking silk weavers from prosecution. More than a century after his passing\, Willever has uncovered new sources that illuminate Hughes’s role as a local and national figure of consequence\, including his friendship and political alliance with U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. \nDaniel J. Willever is a lifelong resident of Passaic County and a social studies teacher at Ramsey High School in Bergen County\, N.J. He studied history and education at Gettysburg College\, Drew University and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 2019\, he was the New Jersey recipient of the Milken Educator Award\, a national recognition for excellence in teaching. He currently resides in West Milford\, N.J. with his wife\, Christina\, and dog\, Savannah. \nThis lecture will be presented virtually\, via zoom. The lecture is free of charge\, but donations to the Paterson Museum Foundation are requested. Donations can be submitted via paypal or check. SUMMARY:Lecture: Hamilton’s Report
DESCRIPTION:The Paterson Museum Foundation invites you to join us on Zoom on Tuesday\, September 12th at 7pm as public historian and author of Hamilton Versus Wall Street\, Nancy Spannaus\, presents Hamilton’s Report on Manufactures: The Ideas That Shaped Our World. \nIn December of 1791\, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton issued one of the most important state papers in U.S. history\, his Report on the Subject of Manufactures. That paper defined principles of political economy\, which were the foundation for defending the liberties won in the Revolutionary War\, and fulfilling the goals outlined in the Preamble of our Constitution. \nAt the same time\, however\, Hamilton was initiating what could be called a pilot project for his manufacturing perspective\, the creation of the Society for Useful Manufactures at Passaic Falls and the city of Paterson! The history of Paterson’s success as a manufacturing center and Hamilton’s ideas are inextricably linked. \nOn September 12\, Spannaus will discuss Hamilton’s economic perspective and its long-lasting impact on U.S. and world history. As Leonard Zax\, founder and president emeritus of the Partnership for Paterson put it in his review of Spannaus’ book\, “Nancy Spannaus properly lifts Hamilton’s Report on Manufactures to a place of supreme importance in the annals of American economic history.”\nIn her talk\, Spannaus will also take on a number of the myths which have prevented Americans from implementing his approach today. \nThis lecture will be presented virtually\, via zoom. The lecture is free of charge\, but donations to the Paterson Museum Foundation are requested. Donations can be submitted via paypal or check. For more information on the program\, or to register for the Zoom link\, please email events@patersonmuseumfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Recovering Paterson
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Recovering Paterson in Paterson. William Carlos Williams’s epic poem Paterson announces itself as a poem of place. Its title points us to the subject of the poem: Paterson\, New Jersey. And yet\, scholarship on Williams’s epic poem has often overlooked the history\, geography\, and people of Paterson. This talk seeks to recover the importance of Paterson in Paterson by discussing Williams’s relationship with the city—a relationship that both grew with the poem and exceeded it. Presented by Kyra Morris\, a PhD candidate in English at Princeton University. Join us in-person at 1pm.
